1. Overview

This page explains the cookies and browser storage VeriVote uses and how you control them. We keep this to a minimum: strictly-necessary items that make the site work, and a single privacy-friendly analytics tool that does not run at all unless you consent. We do not use advertising, marketing, or cross-site tracking cookies.

2. Strictly-necessary

These are required for the site to function and are set regardless of your analytics choice:

  • Authentication — session cookies set by our identity provider, Clerk, so you can sign in and stay signed in.
  • Country preference — a vv-country cookie that records whether you are browsing the US or Israel site, so shared and unprefixed links resolve to the right country.
  • Consent record — your cookie choice itself (see below), stored so we do not re-prompt you on every visit.

3. Analytics (optional, consent-gated)

We use PostHog (EU-hosted) for privacy-friendly product analytics to understand how the site is used and improve it. This is entirely optional. PostHog is not initialized and captures nothing until you actively grant consent — while your choice is unset or declined, no analytics runs and no analytics identifiers are set. We do not sell your data.

4. Your consent record

When you make a choice in the consent banner, we store it in your browser's localStorage under the key verivote_cookie_consent_v2 as either accepted or declined. This is stored locally on your device, is not transmitted to a third party, and is only read to decide whether analytics may run and whether to show you the banner again.

5. Changing or withdrawing consent

The consent banner appears the first time you visit, while no choice has been recorded. Choosing Decline keeps analytics off; choosing Accept allows PostHog to start immediately, with no page reload.

To change a choice you have already made, clear the stored consent record for this site — remove the verivote_cookie_consent_v2 entry via your browser's site data / storage settings, or clear this site's data. With no recorded choice, the banner reappears on your next visit and you can choose again. If you had previously accepted, clearing the record also stops analytics until you choose again.
